Greek life promotes many different positive aspects but one that I believe is incredibly important and deserves much attention is community service. Most of the time, the public recognizes all of the wrongdoings that occurs within the Greek community, but never the positives such as community service. The Greek system is the largest network of volunteers in the United States. It is estimated that as a whole, Greeks volunteer approximately 10 million hours a year. By volunteering their time, chapter members often learn responsibility, a sense of community, the importance of giving back and making a difference and more. Community service is a large part of what lures college students to the Greek system. It absolutely allows a person to grow and appreciate the simplest things in life. The ability to give back to others through service and raising money is the most rewarding feeling.
I personally have been a volunteer since a young age, and when I got to college and witnessed the community service the Greeks on my campus were involved in, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. People may not realize it but Greeks make an impact on those in need everyday. To be a part of a Greek organization and to help those in need may not seem like much to the fortunate, but to those in need, it means everything and as a Greek, it means everything to me to be able to give back.
